General information

Regional Unit of Thesprotia as a coastal regional authority which invests in the promotion of coastal and maritime tourism as well as local primary production in a sustainable and viable way.

The Port of Igoumenitsa is the 2nd largest port in Greece. Due to its location, its modern facilities and its connection to the Egnatia Motorway consists one of the major gates to/from South East Europe.

A rough and mountainous region, Thesprotia is located in north-western Greece and extends to the sea. Sandy beaches, crystalline waters, untouched nature, important wetland habitats and impressive mountains all compose an attractive destination for alternative tourism. Furthermore, visitors also have the chance to visit important cultural monuments situated in impressive scenery.

One of the region’s first priorities is the promotion of the alternative and sustainable forms of tourism as a means to regional development and the exploitation of synergies with local production of the agricultural sector.

The territory of Thesprotia Prefecture is around 150.000 ha. It is located in north-western Greece and extends to the Adriatic Sea as it is illustrated at the picture below. The total population is about 46.091 inh. and the main economical activities are: agriculture, crafts and tourism. It represents a mountainous region with rough terrain (almost 70% of the whole area) and significant natural and forest wealth.

The area consists of a representative territory of both the Epirus Region and the majority of geographical units of the Country. In fact, it satisfies (in combination) the following criteria which are actually the main characteristics of every (more or less) Greek territory:

- Intense maritime and coastal activity (tourism, fisheries, aquaculture)
- Mountainous morphology – dispersed areas – low density population
- Great natural environment and resources (forests, lakes, rivers, protected areas)
- Sites of archaeological and cultural significance
- Prevailed development model that is mainly based on tourism/services and local primary production

Given the above, the proposed area achieves high level of representation and good quality features for further adoption into other Greek territories.
